The device can fill a sandbox in one minute. And when recent flood waters threatened his own home Stacey Babiarz used his machine to save his home as well as the homes of his neighbors.

Babiarz was inspired to invent his sandbag filling machine, which is called the Bucket Bagger, while watching news reports on Hurricane Katrina. After watching the reports of people trying to keep flood waters out with the use of sandbags, Babiarz set out to find a mechanized, portable and affordable way to efficiently fill sandbags.

A college student Yao, from Shanghai has created lamps that not only saves energy but also transforms.

Man kind is now very well aware of the importance of natural resources and therefore is looking-out for new ways of saving energy. In their surge for conserving electricity, most of the scientists have invented various devices that can help in saving electricity, but are not fully successful in launching those devices due to some drawbacks in their technology or prevailing market conditions.

But a college student Yao, from Shanghai has created lamps that not only saves energy but also transforms. The lamp is given a shape of a smiley face as can be seen in the picture. These lamps are designed in a way that people can also play with them by making the smiley face bigger or smaller in size. The more you expand the lamp shade the more light it will provide and vice-versa.

In one contest organized by a lightning company named as Philips Lamp Contest 2008, for developing innovative designs and technologies, Yao, a student at East China Normal University, participated and had won the first prize. Yao Yi’s lamp illuminates using more than 40 LED lights, which are cooler than traditional bulbs. Energy experts say LED lights use about a tenth of the power that old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs need. They’re even more efficient than the “green” compact flourescent bulbs, with LED lights using one-third of the power. They also said that the technology is also exceptional in the sense as it saves the expenses and the amount of work that will need to be done.

Yao said that he only needs to work with the builders and designers before launching it in the market for up gradations.

The world consumes 86 million barrels of oil each day and the price of gas is at an average of $4 a gallon. Although the dream answer would be to find an alternative to oil, we know that we are years away from that type of technology. So the oil industry and inventors around the world are searching for ways to increase oil products. (more…)

After devoting countless hours towards developing your idea, filing a patent application, and all the other time consuming and expensive parts of developing an idea, the last thing you want is to try to commercialize your product and have it fail. There are three big errors that independent inventors and big companies both make when it comes to commercializing their product that cause the product to fail. Listen to last week’s edition of Entrepreneur Magazine’s inventions, Patents and Beyond to hear Bonnie Griffin Kaake discuss these errors with hosts Jillian Freed and Attorney Steven Leavitt. The USPTO has issued its first accelerated patent. The first patent was issue for a printer ink gauge, was issued in 6 monthes and saved the inventor almost 18 months of review.

Accelerated examination allows any innovator in any technology to get a full patent review and decision within twelve months,” noted Jon Dudas, under secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. In return for cutting the time to obtain a patent decision by 25-75%, the agency asks the applicant for a better application and process. Inventors who want speedy results can get them, so long as they help improve the process.”

If you have a new patent you’re applying for this could save you considerable time in receiving your patent. You will need to provide the USPTO with more focussed and detailed information so the examiners can more quickly come to the correct decision on your patent.
